Bug 302638 – Since a few days, random program crashes. Related to sys-libs/glibc-2.10.1-r1 ???

[This bugreport is somehow incomplete, since I cant access the box in question right now and just report from memory. Will post more info later.]

In the last few days, I have observed twice on my office computer a sudden complete failure. While in KDE, within seconds, random programs crash. 

The first time, X froze (hard reset required.)
The second time, I was able to switch to the text console. Syslog showed random processes crashing (also kdeinit, and login when I tried to log in on the text console), with a segv in ld-2.10. Trying CTRL-ALT-DEL for a reboot led to an oops. 

This is new, the box was stable for nearly a year. Barring sudden hardware failure, what could be the problem? Could it be related to the update to glibc-2.10.1-r1 ???

90% stable amd64 system with current stable gcc. Intel Core2 with corresponding march flag. Splitedbug, MAKEOPTS="-j3", some ebuilds from sunrise. VMware modules.

Need a `emerge --info` output, and preferably also backtrace[1]

Just from looking at the symptoms, have you run memtest for a few hours?
Sounds like a hardware failure to me

Reopening with additional info from the logs. Memtest will run tomorrow.
Core dumps are not available yet, I will have them when it happens again.

memtest86+ found no problems so far

Problem seems to have disappeared. Cosmic radiation? :)
