what is the version of gnome-terminal ? could you add the output of: emerge -pv gvfs devicekit-power hal consolekit policykit polkit polkit-gnome gnome-session gnome-terminal Also, could you run your root gnome terminal, then post the output of ck-list-sessions? Things will most likely get back in order if you get rid of policykit. Gnome 2.28 is near to go stable (bug #314899), can you try with it? It uses new polkit... good luck!
