Coverage-3.2 fails to build the python-3.1 part, regardless of whether I set the system python version to 2.6 or 3.1 (so far, I have used 2.6 as the default version)

Well, now this is getting funny... It fails as described on ~x86, but builds fine on ~amd64. Both systems use python-2.6 and other programs are exactly on the same version.

Ok, this was fixed by rebuilding setuptools, don't know what broke it in the first place...
