Portage contains: -
media-sound/alsa-driver-0.9.7
media-libs/alsa-lib-0.9.6
Portage SHOULD contain: -
media-sound/alsa-driver-0.9.7
media-libs/alsa-lib-0.9.7

I.E. alsa-lib should be version 0.9.7, to match the version of alsa-driver.
Notice also, that alsa-lib is needed with the latest kernel 2.6.0.test6, as
test6 includes alsa-driver 0.9.7 now.

If alsa-driver does not match alsa-lib, some sound cards, e.g. Audigy2 will not
work.

Your statement is reversed, really. ;^)  It should read that the version
of
"alsa-lib" should match the version of "alsa-driver" under some circumstances.

Anyhow, alsa-lib-0.9.7 is now in the portage tree.  It wasn't before because
I was seeing weird compilation errors with it.  I think that the ALSA folks
fixed the problem a day after the initial release and re-released the new
tarball
without bumping the version of the alsa-lib package.  Now it compiles fine,
but
it was missing files previously.  Go figure...
