Bug 296185

Summary: Upgrade to kernel 2.6.31 and nvidia-drivers-185.18.36-r1 causes no screen on X startup

Description David Mulford 2009-12-08 13:35:04 UTC
After compiling a new kernel, then compiling the new nvidia-drivers, I no longer have a graphical interface.

It is worth noting that after downgrading to gentoo-sources-2.6.31 and nvidia-drivers-180.60, the versions that previously worked well, also no longer work.

I could not find any relevant errors in Xorg.log and switching desktop managers did not work, either.

dmesg reports that everything is fine.

Following the Gentoo X and nvidia guides produced nothing.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Compile nvidia-drivers
2. Start an X11 session

Actual Results:
X *seems* to startup, but all that is seen is a blank, black screen.

Expected Results:
The upgrade should go well, and my graphical interface should start up without incident.

Will get emerge --info once I get home and can get the old laptop out.

I experience the exact same problem.
Had to go back to 2.6.30 and 180.60.
Gerard.

Downgrading yields the same results. Now I'm back at gentoo-sources-2.6.30-r6 and nvidia-drivers-180.60

Comment 5 David Mulford 2009-12-11 05:22:05 UTC
The aforementioned kernel and nvidia-drivers upgrades were caused by me performing a world update.

This also happened to upgrade gcc (which I did not notice).

Filing as not a bug as I suspect that I have now have to rebuild the entire system with the new gcc version.
