Mind you, this breaks connectivity with older versions of NRPE.

what is the status of this ebuild? The current nrpe (1.8) won't work with the current nagios. 2.0 is needed.

Can I suggest we also need the following:

a) A line in /etc/services to support NRPE:
nrpe            9000/tcp                        # nrpe daemon

b) A default /etc/xinet.d entry (locked down) to allow this to run as a daemon. This is an old inet.d entry:
nrpe    stream  tcp     nowait  nagios /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/nagios/nrpe -i /usr/nagios/nrpe.cfg

Already fixed in portage.
