seems like the error is leftover artefacts in first.s from the preprocessing
stage; whether the preprocessor or the input is illegal I haven't been able to
figure out, but it consists of empty lines with "S".

"emerge lilo" ;)
(guess you need the above compiler/assmbler versions too)
