Seems that nvidia hasn't upgraded their legacy driver to support xserver-xorg-1.7.1 so users of legacy driver will get stuck in version 1.6.99. Does somebody know if this issue will be solved, and what does gentoo recommend to the users suffering from this problem? Maybe masking 1.7.1, but is this the best solution?

I've heard about the xf86-video-nouveau driver... I've looked around the official wiki, but it seems this driver isn't a good option if you want 3d hardware acceleration, and i think my module isn't working fine with this driver (GeForce4 440 Go 64M). Also they don't support power management, and this is a disadvantage for portable computers. I don't mind, my portable computer is always connected to the AC Power, and i don't mind if the graphics card never goes to sleep.

Has someone tried to solve this conflict, deleting the nvidia-driver, installing xorg-server-1.7.1 and reinstalling the nvidia-driver. Is xorg-server-1.6.99 a direct dependency for this driver? Will xorg crash if i install the nvidia driver?

The latest beta driver 190.36, has official support for xserver 1.7.0. While I can't make any concrete promises as to if or when, we do plan to backport support for that server to the 96.43.* legacy series eventually.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge --sync (once a day... xD)
2. emerge -DuNapv world

Actual Results:

Expected Results:  
nvidia-driver-96.43.13 support xorg-server-1.7.1 = no conflict

They are binary only drivers, nothing we can fix even if we wanted to. Use xf86-video-nv and uninstall nvidia-drivers.

IMHO I think i've been very clear in my explanation... i know that nvidia has closed software and that they wont free it so the community can solve this issue. 

On the other hand, after your reply... your suggestion of using nv has confused me. I thought nv didn't support 3d hardware acceleration. Is this issue solved? Is the nv driver working fine? Is it better to mask xorg-server-1.7.1 or to use nv? Have i got to change my /etc/X11/xorg.conf configuration?

I've attached my actual xorg.conf... do i need to change only the nvidia line with nv, or do i need to change something else?

Sorry about the bunch of questions... i won't mind if you redirect me to www.google.com, but i would be grateful if you help me in this issue.
