When I upgrade to shared-mime-info, some apps stopped being able to handle pngs. For example gajim: File "/usr/lib64/python2.6/site-packages/gajim/conversation_textview.py", line 164, in ConversationTextview gajim.DATA_DIR, 'pixmaps', 'muc_separator.png')) glib.GError: Das Format der Bilddatei »/usr/share/gajim/data/pixmaps/muc_separator.png« konnte nicht erkannt werden (error message is german, rough translation "format of the image file /usr/share/.../muc_separator.png could not be detected) gajim stops working then. In kde, some application icons disappear (on running applications). I stopped investigating it further and masked shared-mime-info-0.70 for the time being (with 0.60 everything is fine). I know at least one more gentoo user having this problem.
