Description pavel sanda 2009-10-13 14:00:57 UTC
"xset r rate 300 100" seems not to work anymore correctly.
it looks like to have its default auterepeat speed without change on small values (delay seems to be accepted correctly).

even more strange - when i set the keyboard to very small delay time eg
xset r rate 100 100
then i get fast autorepeat for a few first hundred miliseconds but after that i'm back on a slow autorepeat.

xorg-server 1.6.5, all xset-1.0.3/1.0.4/1.1.0 affected.

(for sure this worked on older machine with xorg-server-1.1.1 and xset 1.0.2)

Reproducible: Always

are you able to reproduce my problems?
if no have you at least idea where should i look in? can be hal interfering with keyboard?
Comment 4 Wormo (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-10-23 06:51:10 UTC
No, didn't manage to reproduce it -- tested on a somewhat older X server (1.6.1 instead of 1.6.5) and xset 1.0.4 without seeing the problem. My guess is that it will turn out to be another auto-repeat bug related to evdev driver (e.g. gentoo users have run into this bug: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17925#c38)

What version of evdev driver are you using?
Comment 5 pavel sanda 2009-10-25 09:03:51 UTC
i have tried both xf86-input-evdev-2.2.5 and 2.1.3 with the same result.
Comment 6 Chí-Thanh Christopher Nguyễn gentoo-dev 2009-10-25 09:27:38 UTC
Does the workaround from the upstream bug work? And attach your xorg.conf please
Comment 7 pavel sanda 2009-10-25 10:46:54 UTC
the patch seems to be already in for 2.2.5. anyway applied to 2.1.3 makes no difference.

attaching xorg.conf. from what i have seen in the linked bug - its maybe related i use AllowEmptyInput variable which is intentional though, otherwise my keyboard wont start att all in X.

xorg.conf
Comment 9 Chí-Thanh Christopher Nguyễn gentoo-dev 2009-10-25 15:23:27 UTC
if you look at the upstream bug, the AllowEmptyInput option can be one trigger for the keyboard repeat issue.

Try to rename/remove xorg.conf then start X. Make sure hald is started first and xf86-input-evdev is installed properly (no abi mismatch errors in Xorg.0.log)
Comment 10 Rémi Cardona (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-10-26 13:06:44 UTC
You should not be using AllowEmptyInput, it's a development/debugging option.

If you want to keep a HAL-less Xorg, you should be using :
    Option "AutoAddDevices" "false"
instead.

If you want to migrate to HAL/evdev, please follow the Xorg 1.5 upgrade guide [1] for which the input section is still valid for 1.6.

Thanks

Comment 11 pavel sanda 2009-10-26 18:29:12 UTC
hello i finally get it work. for records:
1. from some reason i dont understand restarting X is not enough when one wants to emerge/test different settings/drivers. i needed to reboot the whole machine in some cases.
2. adding hald into default runlevel was missing
3. removing AllowEmptyInput was needed

basically all my faults. thanks for help, you saved my life :)

just fyi part of the problems were caused by the fact that when configuring X i simply followed google's result on "gentoo xorg" which leads to http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml which has no single hint about setting up hal and i was not migrating to read the upgrade guide.

anyway thanks again.

"/etc/init.d/xdm restart" should be more than enough for X drivers. Logging out of your desktop might not be though.

Yeah, lots of people have that instead of AutoAddDevices... I blame google :)

Yeah, sorry for that mess, we've been working on updating our docs but we're somewhat behind.

Sorry for the mess, we'll do our best to fix our docs soon.

Thanks for the follow up, we greatly appreciate it :)
