Attempting to upgrade from 2.1.4 to 3.0.6, now 3.0.8.  Build fails with cryptic errors:

Please try to rebuild bin86 and then re-emerge virtualbox-ose:

emerge -1 sys-devel/bin86

Alessio, that did it!

Is there anything in the output that could have led me to suspect that package?  I had no idea that one would have anything to do with the problem (I wasn't even really aware of it by name--it was last built around Sep. 2007).

the answer is maybe, the output you got is a little cryptic i agree
with this, time ago i noticed this kind of problem reading bug #125909
(similar problem with xorg-server), unluckly i'm unable to reproduce
this issue with on my systems.
