When trying to update from glib-2.20.4 to glib-2.20.5, I get:

.libs/gcontenttype.o: file not recognized: File truncated
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[4]: *** [libgio-2.0.la] Error 1
...

(it had only two USE flags enabled: "fam" and "hardened")

Looks, like a standard parallel make/ccache failure.
Try lowering MAKEOPTS/cleaning the cache.

Thanks, it seems that was the cause, note that I had to remove the -j flag completely and also the ccache in order to get it compiling
