Is 0.57 an alpha or a stable release for upstream?  I can't tell from the website, but the files have ${foo}a.tgz.

I don't know. I think they don't differ between stable and unstable releases, just svn work and releases. According to http://mp3splt.sourceforge.net/mp3splt_page/news.php the a.tgz files were bugfix releases.
