Exceptionally asking for immediate stabilisation, because -r3 fails to build with Emacs 23. (And -r4 won't see much field testing anyway, since I'd expect most users to use vm-8*, except a few minimalists and purists.)
Don't be annoyed by the many compile-time warnings about "old-style backquotes", they are harmless.
