That's not a bug, that's a feature. None of those things were strictly necessary to have a working basic Xfce install. You'll need to add the applications you wish to keep to your world file (emerge --noreplace packagename), based on the output of emerge -p --depclean. That way you won't lose everything. Re-read the Xfce guide: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xfce-config.xml It was a couple of months ago last time I tried to install it. Anyway, no problems at all with this lightweight policy for XFCE, I love it, but It would be a big plus if an einfo in postinst() can be added so that you know what to do next (choose a terminal an icon set and whatever) or at least a link to the install guide. Thank you very much. I just added this: * xfce4-meta will just provide a minimal set of packages.
