Description Rajiv Aaron Manglani (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-09-09 15:19:21 UTC
the x86 install doc in section 16 says:

If you have an IDE cd burner, then you need to enable SCSI emulation ...
to have them automatically added at boot time.

this is no longer needed with cdrecord 2.x since you can burn directly using the
ATAPI interface.

we should tell users that scsi emulation for the cdr is now optional as they
can burn using the ATAPI interface.
Comment 1 Bartosch Pixa (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-09-10 01:01:38 UTC
that's true
but, i don't think we should put that in just now as it will probably cause lots
of bugs on all the cdr frontends we have in portage.
because right now the only frontend that can handle atapi is xcdroast and all the
others will not work at all.
Comment 2 Sven Vermeulen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-09-10 01:17:37 UTC
I agree with Bartosch. Also, is this really true for 2.4 kernels? I thought the kernel-stuff needed for ATAPI-burning was only available in 2.5+ kernels...
Comment 3 Lars Weiler (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-09-10 07:32:26 UTC
No problems with a 2.4-kernel since January this year. I get only a warning in xcdroast, that using ATAPI could cause problems.

So, for now I propose to leave everything "as is". Nevertheless we can add a section to the FAQ:

Q: Do I need SCSI-emulation for recording CDs?
A: No. With the recent cdrtools and xcdroast you're able to burn CDs directly via the ATAPI-interface. Other CD recording tools still need the SCSI-emulation, so it is a good thing to install it.
Comment 4 Sven Vermeulen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-09-10 08:28:53 UTC
You're free to add this to the FAQ if you really think this is necessary. However, FAQs aren't read, they are referenced. A FAQ is only interesting if:
- it really is a _Frequently_ Asked Question
- the answer is long enough to not say it directly but to point the user to some URL.

CMIIAW, but I don't believe this is a FAQ in se...

k3d can handle it just fine, i use it all the time in 2.6.x w/out scsi emu
Comment 6 bugs 2003-09-10 23:06:12 UTC
I would like to add my enthusiastic support for this since the last dozen CDs I tried to burn were toasters.
I tried again and again, no luck. Recreated the ISO several times.
Tried the same ISO with ATAPI instead of ide-scsi, and burned fine first time.
Happy days! And no more unnecessary SCSI support in the kernel.
Comment 7 Sven Vermeulen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-09-11 01:19:35 UTC
Seems like I'll have to change my vision on this. So xcdroast and k3b work. What about gtoaster? I think those three are the most known/used.

Does cdrdao work with ATAPI?

patch looks good
Comment 11 Sven Vermeulen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-12-27 04:39:48 UTC
In the handbook, the support for SCSI emulation isn't listed anymore.
