I know this has been brought up before (bug #27154)
and Robin Johnson said he strongly believed that
.maildir was better than Maildir because:
because i've seen lots of [l]users select everything
visible in their home directory, and delete. 'rm -rf *'
and it's gone. at least with .maildir, it is protected.
Furthermore, nothing in any of the maildir standards
specificied the actual name of the directory.
I dont think this is such a good reason. Yes,
there's nothing in the maildir standards
about the name, but that doesn't mean you have
to find a new one. Alot of programs assume
the name to be Maildir, and AFAIK gentoo is the
only distribution that uses .maildir, so
for one it's a compatability issue. Furthermore,
I think it's up to the system administrator whether
he wants to dumb down the system, I for one
would prefer to have Maildir as the default.

You note a lot of programs,
such as... ?

I've seen at least one qmail building script out there that uses .maildir.

It will be a major compatability issue to change over to Maildir from .maildir as well.

If you don't like .maildir, you know where defaultdelivery is, and how it works, and that it is in CONFIG_PROTECT, so you can go and change it yourself.

I didn't come up with the .maildir name, I've just kept it going since I picked up qmail.

Ok, this reason is much better than the former,
and this one I can live with :-).
