Description Ronan Arraes Jardim Chagas 2009-08-22 18:44:06 UTC
This version of NTFS-3G have taken out a very important feature for non-English speakers users: the support for different encodings in locales. It has implemented the feature for UTF-8 being transparently used by the file systems, so if you use a UTF-8 locale for your Linux, than you are fine.

But many users, like me, uses other locales that isn't encoded by UTF-8. I, for example, am using pt_BR.ISO-8859-1 for decades, so thousands of files are encoded this way. Conclusion: there is no way for me to change my system for a UTF-8 Brazilian locale.

NTFS-3g guys are working to bring the functionality to transparently support non-UTF8 locales. For more information, look at the NTFS-3g Forum: http://forum.ntfs-3g.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1088

A real flame war can be started if we discuss about changing the encoding type to UTF-8. In my opinion, the user should decide what they want, so I think that NTFS-3G should be masked until this issue are resolved, just to avoid everyone to migrate to UTF-8 locale.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install NTFS-3G >= 2009.2.1 in a non-UTF8 system.
2. Mount a NTFS partition with files with accents and/or non-English characters.

Actual Results:
If you list them, the accents and the others non-English characters will be all messed.

Expected Results:
NTFS-3G should be support for non-UTF8 locales, so the non-English characters in names on a NTFS partition will be shown right.
