Description ferret 2009-07-22 22:53:26 UTC
emul-linux-x86-compat contains old 32-bit versions of gcc and glibc related libraries (namely the standard C and C++ libraries).

On amd64 this is listed in RDEPEND of mozilla-firefox-bin, however it doesn't seem to use it at all. After removing emul-linux-x86-compat I ran the following command with the following results:

ferret@jupiter ~ $ qlist mozilla-firefox-bin | while read -r; do ldd "$REPLY" 2>/dev/null; done | grep 'not found'
	libgconf-2.so.4 => not found
	libORBit-2.so.0 => not found
	libgconf-2.so.4 => not found
	libORBit-2.so.0 => not found
	libgnomevfs-2.so.0 => not found
	libgnome-2.so.0 => not found
	libbonobo-2.so.0 => not found
	libbonobo-activation.so.4 => not found
	libgnomevfs-2.so.0 => not found
	libgconf-2.so.4 => not found
	libORBit-2.so.0 => not found
ferret@jupiter ~ $

The above missing libraries are a known, unrelated Crash Reporter issue.

I also looked directly at ldd /opt/firefox/firefox-bin ; and the closest relevant dependency I could see was libstdc++.so.6, but that isn't provided by emul-linux-x86-compat.

I also tried running it with ltrace both with emul-linux-x86-compat installed and not installed, and it did not touch any of its files.

So I think it is a superfluous dependency and I would like it to be removed.

Note that I do not have a no-multilib system, so I am unable to test it on that; but I don't see how mozilla-firefox-bin uses any of the libraries in this package.

Comment 1 Jory A. Pratt gentoo-dev 2009-07-23 00:20:58 UTC
-bin packages are masked on no-multilib setups as they do not support and 32bit support.
Comment 2 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2009-12-30 13:45:56 UTC
emul-linux-x86-compat package is now providing 32 bits libs from:
sys-libs/lib-compat
sys-libs/libstdc++-v3

Seems that, on x86, it's not depending on these libs, then, I am not sure if that depend is ok on amd64 :-/
Comment 3 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2010-01-02 14:39:59 UTC
Finally fixed in 299297
