http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/HDAPS#GUI_monitoring refers to a nice gnome applet called gnome-hdaps-applet by Jon Escombe. I've written an ebuild. Works with the current gentoo-sources-2.6.29-r5 and app-laptop/hdapsd-20090401,

The ebuild is located in my svn repo at http://svn.xmw.de/gentoo-overlay/gnome-extra/hdaps-applet/
