Description Philippe Chaintreuil 2009-05-28 16:20:25 UTC
My box had gcc 4.1.2 and 4.3.2-r3 installed. [I was unaware that] gcc 4.1.2 was my current active/default gcc version via gcc-config. I uninstalled gcc 4.1.2 and this caused the following output:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
<<< dir /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/4.1.2/include
<<< dir /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/4.1.2/32
<<< dir /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/4.1.2
--- !empty dir /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu
--- !empty dir /usr/lib/gcc
--- !empty dir /usr/lib
--- !empty dir /usr/bin
--- !empty dir /usr
--- !empty dir /etc/eselect/compiler
--- !empty dir /etc/eselect
--- !empty dir /etc/env.d/gcc
--- !empty dir /etc/env.d
--- !empty dir /etc
 * Running 'fix_libtool_files.sh 4.1.2'
 * Scanning libtool files for hardcoded gcc library paths...
gcc-config: error: could not run/locate 'gcc'
:0: assertion failed: (gcc -dumpversion) | getline NEWVER)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

emerge then went on to the next package for uninstalling without paying any mind.

Based on that, my guess is this output is from the bottom of the toolchain.eclass's gcc-compiler_pkg_postrm() and fix_libtool_files.sh.

When I next went to install a program, gcc could not be found as gcc-config was in an invalid state. The output of the configure scripts was similar to the 2nd to last line in the output above. It would say something about "[...]could not run/locate 'gcc'".

I have since pointed gcc-config to the newer (still installed) gcc and my system seems to be happy.

This is probably a problem with either the gcc uninstall not checking if it's uninstalling the current gcc and updating gcc-config or something with fix_libtool_files.sh. We're pretty far out of my knowledge base. =)
