![]() ns itself is not a dead project. gns3 is not replacement but just a different project. Currently ns now evolves into ns-3 and actually currently upstream gonna rewrite everything using python and they even did first pre-release and have some further plans: http://www.nsnam.org/wiki/index.php/Roadmap I'm not sure about nam but I think it's better to keep ns in the tree for some unspecified time but of course if you think otcl should be hardmasked, hardmask all this packages (like you already did). [OffTopic]Also I'm not sure why we need any abadonware overlay since we already have CVS exactly for such things - to get old software ;)[/OffTopic] I'd also like to keep ns2/nam in tree. GNS3 is a completely different thing, even if it's also a network simulator. ok, I see your points. but those packages prevent the stabilization of other major packages (tcl-8.5, tk-8.5 mostly). I'd rather keep them masked, do you agree? eventually, ns-3 will be released, and obsoleted packages could be dropped. btw I won't touch any pkgs without hearing netmon's last word. cheers # Federico Ferri <mescalinum@gentoo.org> (26 May 2008) # Deprecated cause depending on unmaintained dev-tcltk/otcl. # Everything being moved to 'abandonware' overlay. # Possible replacement: net-misc/gns3 (sunrise overlay) # Going for removal in ~30 days if no one objects. # removal bug #271305 net-analyzer/ns net-analyzer/nam abandonware overlay is really pointless when we have CVS attic and sunrise if a user steps up to maintain said apps. ;) I hope you are aware that ns-3 is actually already going in version 3.4, and 3.5 slated for release this summer.. (http://www.nsnam.org/) yep, we talked on IRC. packages are not going to be removed. will remain masked for tcl8.5 stabilization though. (In reply to comment #6) > packages are not going to be removed. Your bug then ;) (In reply to comment #7) > (In reply to comment #6) > > packages are not going to be removed. > Good. As previously stated, gns3 is not an equivalent program. also, the latest ns-2 release is 2.3.4, Jun 17 2009. http://www.isi.edu/nsnam/ns/ns-build.html Finally, nam is used in and by ns-3 and should not be removed. Removed from tree; since apparently no commits was made for progress on this. If I removed something that was *working* i'll be reverting this asap. NS2 was and is working for me just fine. Obviously I can no longer reinstall it or anything like that since package is gone.. (In reply to comment #9) > Removed from tree; since apparently no commits was made for progress on this. > If I removed something that was *working* i'll be reverting this asap. Please put them back. :) Oh wait, otcl was removed as well, eh? There are still "daily snapshots" at [1] that might be usable, even if no releases were done in years. [1] http://www.isi.edu/nsnam/dist/daily/ *** Bug 293364 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** People! NS2 is obsolete and sucks, that's true. But, there is a big issue -some people DO NEED extactly NS2 and nothing else, since windows users do not want to migrate to NS3. So, everyone who is looking for NS2 - use this distribution: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=149743&package_id=169689&release_id=684492 It is all-in-one package of NS2 and all it's deps, you can install it easily in your homedir or opt. PS: sorry for dup bug report. (In reply to comment #15) > People! NS2 is obsolete and sucks, that's true. But, there is a big issue -some > people DO NEED extactly NS2 and nothing else, since windows users do not want > to migrate to NS3. More because NS3 doesn't still have all features of NS2 (such as Mobile IP :)) |
