Platform is SUSE 10 Enterprise. The `emerge -u system' step causes portage-2.2.00.13405 to be emerged. After that there are 25 packages to emerge. The first one of those is diffutils. Emerging fails early with

that stupid sed wrapper should be dead, which is the bug...

I think this was fixed by now.
