In Makefile.in: /usr/share/xsession & /usr/share/xsession/XBMC.desktop aren't referenced using $(prefix). Hence the sandbox violation... Created attachment 189679 [details, diff]
Patch for XBMC $(prefix) thingie.
I have suggested fixing the $(prefix) upstream and got this reply:

Updated patch since XBMC SVN Revision 19773
