Bug 264956

Summary: module-init-tools-3.5: "modprobe -c" has duplicates
Product: Gentoo Linux Reporter: Sven Wünschmann <wu-s>
Component: [OLD] Core systemAssignee: Gentoo's Team for Core System packages <base-system>
Status: RESOLVED WORKSFORME
Severity: normal

Description Sven Wünschmann 2009-04-05 11:21:29 UTC
Gentoo generates /etc/modprobe.conf from /etc/modprobe.d/* (and /etc/modules.conf the same way from /etc/modules.d/*)

modprobe in version 3.5 gets its configuration from /etc/modprobe.conf and /etc/modprobe.d/*, resulting in duplicate entries in the form of:
----------------
$ modprobe -c
<CONTENT OF /etc/modprobe.conf>
<CONTENT OF /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist>
<CONTENT OF /etc/modprobe.d/pnp-aliases>
<CONTENT OF /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia>
<CONTENT OF /etc/modprobe.d/lirc>
<CONTENT OF /etc/modprobe.d/alsa>
alias acpi*:ACPI0003:* ac
alias acpi*:PNP0C0B:* fan
alias acpi*:PNPb006:* snd_mpu401
alias acpi*:WEC0517:* wbsd
...
----------------

As a consequence, /etc/init.d/alsasound from alsa-utils-1.0.18 tries to load the modules for the soundcard twice:
---------------
$ /etc/init.d/alsasound start
 * Loading ALSA modules ...
 *   Loading: snd-card-0 ...                              [ ok ]
 *   Loading: snd-card-1 ...                              [ ok ]
 *   Loading: snd-card-0 ...                              [ ok ]
 *   Loading: snd-card-1 ...                              [ ok ]
 *   Loading: snd-emu10k1-synth ...                       [ ok ]
 *   Loading: snd-seq-midi ...                            [ ok ]
 * Restoring Mixer Levels ...                             [ ok ]
---------------

There is a thread in the gentoo forum:

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-749717.html

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Stage 3 install (containing module-init-tools-3.4)
2. "emerge --sync"
3. "emerge --uD world" (-> module-init-tools-3.5)
4. "update-modules"

Actual Results:
"modprobe -c | sort | uniq -d" shows the duplicates

Expected Results:
No duplicates from /etc/modprobe.conf and /etc/modprobe.d/*

the generated .conf files are deprecated. no more plans to work on these. same goes for modules.d/.

closing as fixed: upgrade your packages and stop using the .conf files
