also switched to gcc-4.3.3-r1 .. source /etc/profile .. and tried again same errors 

do you need any other info?

-m32 points to gcc trying to build 32bit things (multilib support I presume).
Does your kernel allow running 32bit apps?

yup that was it it seems that upgrading from kernel version 2.6.28-r4 to 2.6.29 something changed spots and as I use genkernel for this particular machine I did not see the change. sorry for the noise.

Adding IA32 emulation fixed the compile .. no wonder it stopped working ..
