Please define "big files". Did you verify that this is no problem with your harddrives?
This bug seems to have nothing to do with x86 herd so I gonna remove the CC on them.

Reassigning to kernel herd.

Have you seen this?

http://ask.adaptec.com/scripts/adaptec_tic.cfg/php.exe/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=15357&p_created=1225366599&p_sid=NqNtKZrj&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPSZwX3NvcnRfYnk9JnBfZ3JpZHNvcnQ9JnBfcm93X2NudD0yNjk3LDI2OTcmcF9wcm9kcz0mcF9jYXRzPSZwX3B2PSZwX2N2PSZwX3NlYXJjaF90eXBlPWFuc3dlcnMuc2VhcmNoX25sJnBfcGFnZT0x&p_li=&p_topview=1

The manufacturer suggests adjusting the timeout and then a few followup steps if an additional error msg appears after the adjustment.

Can you try those steps as described and post back here what happened
Comment 4 Mike Pagano gentoo-dev 2009-03-26 23:06:42 UTC
Please reopen when you've had a chance to try the steps referenced in comment #3
Comment 5 cyril canovas 2009-03-27 10:52:20 UTC
To close this bug , i rebuild all packages with emerge -e world and now everything works fine.
