On my system, "emerge rp-pppoe" failst like this:

gcc -march=pentium2 -Os -pipe -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -ansi -pedantic 
'-DADSL_START_PATH="/usr/sbin/adsl-start"'
'-DADSL_STOP_PATH="/usr/sbin/adsl-stop"'
'-DADSL_STATUS_PATH="/usr/sbin/adsl-status"' -c -o wrapper.o wrapper.c
gcc -o pppoe-wrapper wrapper.o

Type 'make install' as root to install the software.

Sorry for inconvenience, due to hardware proplems, I will probably not be able to answer before November; I have no access to the concerned hardware at the moment; but as far as I remember, the problem also has occured earlier with different hardware & setup.

There were third-party kernel modules present, e.g. nvidia-kernel.
