dev-libs/xapian-bindings-1.0.10 (and all other versions) should create /etc/php/*/ext/xapian.ini when USE php is set to enable the xapian extension in php as other extensions do: pdflib, mapscript, proj from the top of my head.

It should also create a symlink to xapian.ini inside /etc/php/*/ext-active

xapina.ini should read:
 extension=xapian.so

Xapian-bindings is a swig wrapper that comes in many flavors. PHP herd: Please join in with bringing the php-part of this ebuild up to date and address the specifics of this bug

This should be fixed in newer versions. Please try xapian-1.2.7-r2 and report back.

No response from the original reporter.  Also, it works for me.  So I'm closing this one.

Please reopen if it *really* is still a problem.
