And indeed the file:
/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/3.4.6//.libs/libstdc++.a
does not exist.

However when I remove the .libs the file does exist and belongs to gcc:

# equery belongs /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/3.4.6/libstdc++.a

(Note that this is a freshly installed hardened server. I did reemerged gcc because I added the 'nls' use flag but it was just a reemerge not an upgrade. So I didn't follow the Gentoo GCC upgrade guide)

this (.libs) is weird, have you tried to run fix_libtool_files.sh?

it is very weird.  please run like:
grep '.libs/libstdc++.a' /usr/bin/libtool /usr/lib/*.la

and post the output as an attachment

I don't know what I did exactly. But yesterday I did a 'fix_libtool_files.sh' according to the 'Gentoo GCC Upgrade Guide'. And now emerging tiff suddenly works.

Sorry for the noise and thanks for the responses. I'm resolving the bug as fixed.
