This driver was released yesterday, a week after 2.6.0 (which isn't in Portage yet). This release includes stability fixes and kernel mode-setting fixes (which isn't available on kernels below 2.6.29). From the Phoronix blurb on 2.6.0, "This DDX driver brings support for DRI2, i965 XvMC support, SDVO LVDS support, and a plethora of bug-fixes. There are also TV output adjustments and tweaks to the UXA acceleration architecture."

1. Buy Intel video hardware
2. Find/make ebuild
3. Install ebuild

And I've put it in the x11 overlay within a day of its release. This version of the intel driver is currently being held there until more testing is done. But I encourage you to use "layman" to add the "x11" overlay to get this new version.
