I got app-portage/esearch-0.7.1 (but same bug when i tried -r4), and updated to sys-apps/portage-2.2 branch (some overlays require 2.2 ). Now, esync and esearch complain:

moon-gen-3 ~ # esearch foobar
/usr/lib/portage/pym/output.py:39: DeprecationWarning: DEPRECATION NOTICE: The output module was replaced by portage.output

[ Applications found : 0 ]

moon-gen-3 ~ # esync

 * Importing old portage tree

At the beginning, esync failed; but after running "emerge --sync" manually once, i dont have any more the old bug. It's working way better, so, can not reproduce the bug i had yesterday (which got fixed, obviously, by doing emerge --sync).

Please make esearch fully compliant with portage-2.2:
- fixing those deprecation warnings
- detect portage 2.2 so that we dont have to run emerge --sync manually once
- deal with new features

Use eix. esearch probably will be removed (Bug #249414).
