In Bluez 2, the pand command was used to set up PANU connections. I didn't start using Bluez till version 3 but that version removed pand and so I have never been able to setup such a connection. The situation remains the same in Bluez 4. Searching around reveals extremely little about what you're actually supposed to do but apparently this is because it's supposed to _just work_. That doesn't seem to be true right now though, at least not for Gentoo. The biggest clue I've found is in this thread...

The scripts didn't work for me, perhaps because they were written for Bluez 3 rather than 4. They'd probably only require some small adjustments. No doubt this whole process could be automated but who's job would it be? udev's? OpenRC's? I'm not sure. Would you necessarily even want it to be automated? Creating network interfaces for every paired device in range may seem scary for some people. Perhaps it could be done by managing net.bnep* services through OpenRC.

I remember getting networking working over bluetooth with 3.X when I tried it. Wasn't totally out of the box I think.

I've since had some success running my machine as a NAP and have even managed to do so without the help of any applets like Blueman or any calls to dbus-send. It's easier than I thought.

Still no luck with PANU though. I know how to start the connection now but it still won't work. I've been digging through the Bluez source and I think there are some problems. I've mentioned these on the mailing list.
