Summary: problem with ping in virtualbox in gentoo-2008.0 install cd (net active, but unable to ping)

Description phrexianreaper 2008-11-26 09:38:07 UTC
When trying to install in virtualbox-ose 1.6.6, once the disk is booted up and everything is running, trying to issue ping -c3 www.yahoo.com returns 3 lost packets. The network is active and working, but ping returns the destination IP, but nothing else. Accessing www.google.com works through links, though.

Issue is with gentoo-2008.0 install CD.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.boot gentoo install CD 2008.0
2.ping -c3 either google or yahoo
3.Profit?

A simple warning that this may occur will help avoid confusion in the future.

Service providers blocking ping requests/replies has nothing to do with documentation.
Comment 2 phrexianreaper 2008-11-26 23:24:09 UTC
I was requesting a note being made in the docs that this may happen when installing in a virtual machine. It has absolutly nothing to do with anyone blocking anything.

If there's no rhyme or reason, no explanation for why something *may* happen, then there's nothing we can put in there without causing needless disruption and worry in the handbook for other folks attempting the normal install method.

If virtualbox is broken for pings, then that should get fixed, not the handbooks.
