Guys this is still there three and a half years later. The package is also ignoring ldflags, that's why it fails only with forced --as-needed. Ignores CFLAGS as well (see configure.ac), claiming it breaks quantizer if you don't specify the individual flags (probably doesn't like a particular flag); it indeed looks like quite a mess, upstream also appears to be dead (since 2007).
