I couldn't get the latest version of vlc to compile, it complained about missing libcucul.la

In fact /usr/lib64/libcucul.la was missing, and reinstalling libcaca didn't fix this.  Downgrading libcaca from 0.99_beta16 to beta14 fixed this.

Right. If I upgrade licaca again revdep-rebuild wants to build:
dev-libs/DirectFB kde-base/noatun-plugins media-libs/libsdl media-libs/sdl-image media-libs/sdl-mixer media-libs/sdl-ttf media-libs/smpeg media-sound/mpg123 media-video/mjpegtools media-video/transcode media-video/vlc x11-libs/ecore x11-libs/evas

Shouldn't the libcaca ebuild signal something about preserved-libs?
