Was updating ebuild to build/install samtool as well and bumped it to 2.60, available since 2008.03.29.  Attachment forthcoming.

snortsam-2.60 ebuild

This ebuild adds optional debugging support, a default configuration, and an init script.  It also avoids the included buildscript and opts for the existing Makefile, respecting CFLAGS and LDFLAGS.

the 2.60 archive seems to be missing on the homepage. 

Mailed the author, waiting for a reply.

Then let's go for 2.57, which is definitely there and has been for a while.  Renaming the ebuild appropriately works quite well.
