johnm, do you mind mentoring Max?

Max, please submit work through johnm via whatever method johnm prefers for two
weeks. Also, contact me on IRC and I'll get you set up with autovoice on
#gentoo-dev.

This is something I can most certainly do.
Welcome to the team Max :)
Comment 2 Max Kalika (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-06-29 19:58:49 UTC
I can't thank you enough! So at the rist of sounding goofy right off the bat, I suppose the first question is... what do I do now? :-)
Comment 3 Jon Portnoy (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-06-29 20:01:00 UTC
Basically, we have a two week 'trial period' during which you submit work through a mentor (johnm). At the end of that, if you haven't screwed the pooch too badly, you get full dev status (and a @gentoo.org mail, etc).

Dunno if johnm prefers IRC/mail/bugzilla for work submissions, though.
Comment 4 Seemant Kulleen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-06-29 20:21:00 UTC
actually, I have an interest in max as well because of his mythtv stuff.

max -- first order of business in this is to get xmltv/mythtv as bulletproof as possible, please. I'd really like to sort out the Myth* finally. (and btw, I'm looking to you for media-tv maintenance as well).
Comment 5 Max Kalika (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-06-29 20:49:05 UTC
no pressure, eh? :-) On a serious note... I had the 0.8 version running solid as a rock. The 0.9 has given me some grief which I'm sorting out right now -- has nothing to do with the ebuilds or the installation procedure. I work with 3 other people that have each gotten xmltv/myth* stuff running flawlessly. The only current thing I don't like in the mythtv ebuild is the patch/sed hackishness which changes where mythtv looks for config files from /usr/etc/mythtv to just /etc/mythtv. It looks in /usr/share/mythtv as well and the current cvs only has one config file (mysql.txt) left so it might actually make sense to just link /etc/mythtv/mysql.txt to /usr/share/mythtv/mysql.txt and avoid sed all together. I did something similar in my custom mailman ebuild:

http://68.6.36.243:81/chora/co.php/portage/net-mail/mailman/mailman-2.1.2.ebuild?r=1.1

On a side note... To be honest I don't know if I can take on all of media-tv because I have very limited experience with those apps. Freevo was too clunky when I tried it and I would feel very bad taking on something that I couldn't commit as much time to as everything else.

I could devote a lot of time to server-related things in net-mail and net-www as that is what I have to do for work anyway. In particular postfix, cyrus, apache, and php apps. One thing that got me real interested is the idea of consolidating all web-apps to a central directory (I believe /usr/share/web was mentioned as a candidate) where versioned app directories could reside and be linked to the system DocRoot at the users' whim. As this is the way I have such things organized on my servers, I got started on a webapp eclass to use locally. If this is something people could benifit from, I'll be glad to take this on as a pet project.
Comment 6 John Mylchreest (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-06-30 09:59:39 UTC
Just so you know max:
email: johnm@gentoo.org
jabber: johnm@gentoo.org.uk
icq: 8286147
msn: johndmylchreest@microsoft.com
and im almost always in #gentoo-dev on irc.freenode.net

Your more than welcome to submit work through any of these methods, and ask me anything you like. i can give you all the low-down on seemant and his dirty habits ;)

As seemant mentioned, he would like you to sort the mythtv stuff, and id love to see some of it as well, as i might just drag out this dusty wintv card for it :)

Do you IRC much? if not just drop us a mail ;)
