xboard requires gnuchess to run or it will say:

xboard: Failed to start first chess program gnuchess on localhost: gnuchess: No such file or directory

and quit

    elog "No chess engines are emerged by default! If you want a chess engine"
    elog "to play with, you can emerge gnuchess or crafty."

xboard can also be used purely for internet play or manual play so we don't force an engine to be installed.
