Bug 23622 – kword won't open rtf files.

I don't know if this is a gentoo bug or not, since the problem isn't apparent on my debian box. 
 
This is kword 1.2.1-r1.

When I try to open a .rtf file in kword, it fails with an error message similar to these:

These _are_ valid rtf files, as I can open them in Ted.  This even happens when I try and open rtf 
files that kword has saved. 
 
It's rather annoying.
