'man portage' shows to use "**" if KEYWORDS is left blank. Please read that for more info. Also, the man page doesn't suggest to use explicit versions like you have tried. I would expect "cross-avr/binutils **" to definitely work for you. I don't know where you are getting this ebuild from (it doesn't appear to be in the tree) so I cannot check and verify what the ebuild has for keywords already. Jeremy, thank you for your comment - it most definitely was the solution I was looking for. I have to apologize - people who cannot RTFM annoy me, too. Now I'm one of them :-( Your solution worked flawlessly. As for the package, yes, it appears to be in the tree (I just checked the snapshot of portage-20080720.tar.bz2, where portage/sys-devel/binutils/binutils-2.18.50.0.7.ebuild is included).
