The context updated on July 6,2008  which about hard disk is missing.
It'll fail to restart if I setup Gentoo Linux according to the "Gentoo Linux x86 with Software Raid and LVM2 Quick Install Guide".

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.setup Gentoo Linux according to the "Gentoo Linux x86 with Software Raid and LVM2 Quick Install Guide" step by step
2. reboot
3. start :
Actual Results:  
kernel panic-not syncing: VFS:Unable to mount root fs on unknow-block(0,2)

Expected Results:  
start up normally

As mentioned, users should also read the handbook, as the guide does not provide a verbose description of each step.

In your case, you made the common mistake of either 1) not building your needed filesystem drivers directly into the kernel (not as modules), or 2) you didn't correctly setup /etc/fstab for your partition arrangement, or 3) you didn't correctly setup your kernel boot line in /boot/grub/grub.conf

In any of these cases, the correct place to ask for support is in the Gentoo Forums, specifically the Installing Gentoo subforum (right at the top):
