Bug 23255 – wireless setup not working on stable, using pcmcia-cs-3.2.4 and linux-wlan-ng-0.2.0-r2(was working before!)

on a standard install, just emerge linux-wlan-ng change the appropriate files 
and add pcmcia to the default runlevel. reboot. pcmcia beeps twice in a hasty 
way and this is what gets loaded with a prism2 based card(Netgear MA401):

memory_cs, ds, i82365 and pcmcia_core

should have loaded the prism2_cs and p80211 modules instead of memory_cs. 
result:

wireless dead on stable systems, which is strange because it worked a couple 
of days ago when installing from scratch.

ok, alot of bugs relating to wireless doesn't even seem to get assigned. so i've spent the last two weeks resolving this bug myself because nothing happens. the reason that the Netgear MA401RA isn't detected at all by cardctl and that cardmgr loads memory_cs is the fault of the i82365 module. don't ask me why but if you load yenta_socket before pcmcia-cs starts the card is detected and the interface is brought up properly i.e everything works like a charm. this is really odd because as i wrote before it worked flawlessly before. these are the things i did to make it work:

in menuconfig:

General setup->PCMCIA/Cardbus support
    (M) PCMCIA/Cardbus support
    (*) Cardbus support

Network device support->Wireless LAN (non-hamradio)
    (*) Wireless LAN (non-hamradio)
    (M) Hermes chipset 802.11b support (Orinoco/Prism2/Symbol)

added yenta_socket to /etc/modules.autoload.

now everything works like a charm.

something needs to be done in the wireless department because this is just awful how the bugs are handled. it shouldn't take days, weeks or months before a bug gets assigned it should take hours. and there should be posts with questions and progress reports back and forth so the activity can be monitored. i surely hope this will change in the future.

hey,

sorry for the wait on a reply to this bug. my weekends usually spent bug stomping have been tied up with family obligations. If you want to help bug stomp, by all means. i'm currently the only person focused on doing wifi, and i have only so much time. As for this bug, cardmgr will load memory_cs when it can't figure out what the card is by default. *why* it doesn't recognize the card is the tricky part. Depends on the laptop, and the card. Please send me the specifics of your hardware. most laptops work fine i82365 given a specific combination of kernel and hardware, but not always.
