The volume and brigntess keys do not work unless the fn key is pressed. They should, as 
default work without pressing the fn key. The default pbbuttonsd.conf has kbdmode = 
fnpressed.  Changing this to kbdmode = none returns normal functionality. This also 
effects when logged into os x.!!

Reproducible: Didn't try
Steps to Reproduce:
1.edit the /etc/pbbuttonsd.conf
2.change line  kbdmode=fnkeypress to kbdmode=none
3.restart pbbuttonsd

Actual Results:  
keys function as normal

that's a matter of taste, we just install the default config as it comes with pbbuttonsd
