Bug 230371

Summary: net-im/pidgin-2.4.2: main window appears only at top left corner if Metacity "disable_workarounds" option is enabled
Product: Gentoo Linux Reporter: Otávio Cipriani <otavio.n.cipriani>
Component: [OLD] GNOMEAssignee: Gentoo Net-im project <net-im>
Status: RESOLVED INVALID
Severity: trivial CC: gnome
Priority: High
Version: unspecified
Hardware: x86
OS: Linux

Runtime testing required: ---

Description Otávio Cipriani 2008-07-01 17:30:55 UTC
If "/apps/metacity/general/disable_workarounds" is checked/enabled Pidgin main window is always displayed at the top left corner of the screen.

If "disable_workarounds" is disabled, Pidgin main window is shown at the same place it was the last time it was closed.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Disable Metacity workarounds for buggy applications (gconftool-2 --set --type bool /apps/metacity/general/disable_workarounds true);
2. Start Pidgin;
3. Move Pidgin's main window away from the top left corner and close the window;
3. Click on Pidgin's tray icon to display its main window again;
Actual Results:
Pidgin's main window is shown at the top left corner of the screen.

Expected Results:
Pidgin's main window should have appeared at the same position it was when it was closed.

If "/apps/metacity/general/disable_workarounds" is False (the default), Pidgin behaves as expected (it's main window is appears where it was when it was closed).

Maybe because Pidgin does stupid stuff wrt window management that requires workarounds?

Either way, hardly a Gnome issue. Reassigning. Please read metadata.xml before assigning bugs.

Thanks

Maybe you shouldn't disable it?

That is exactly what I thought. I will report this bug to Pidgin developers.

Sorry. I knew it wasn't a GNOME bug, but reading the description of the available categories "GNOME" seemed like the most correct one. My mistake.

I disabled it assuming that only legacy applications would need it and I would benefit from a "more consistent user interface" (as noted by the key description). Aparently I was wrong.
