pyproj "Performs cartographic transformations and geodetic computations". It's python bindings to the proj4 library.

A much better description (taken from http://www.freshports.org/graphics/py-pyproj/):

Pyrex wrapper to provide python interfaces to
PROJ.4 (http://proj.maptools.org) functions.

Performs cartographic transformations (converts from longitude,latitude
to native map projection x,y coordinates and vice versa, or from
one map projection coordinate system directly to another).
