Even if you use the -slang/-sid/-vobsubid command line option the subtitles are not shown. However If you press on the 'j' key while playing the video and select the desired subtitle then the selected subtitle is shown.

I was able to see this behaviour only while playing DVDs. If I execute

  $ mplayer -sid <whatever> file.mkv (and/or .avi/.ogm)

then the subtitles are shown immediately and there is no need to select the desired subtitle using the 'j'-key.

I've made a downgrade to media-video/mplayer-1.0_rc2_p25993 and this version works fine. It seems to be a problem with versions greater than p25993 (I've found #214822 which is somehow related with this problem).


My USE flags for mplayer:

Seems like -sid is a bit flaky ... I'd recommend using -slang instead.

Please test and reopen if it's a problem with newer ( 1.0_rc2_p20090731 )

The problem seems to be fixed. The subtitles are shown (even for DVDs) using -sid and/or -slang
