Bug 22449 – etc-update destroys /etc files

I've done an etc-update after merging a new portage as instructed by the ebuild 
process. As a result all my /etc files likes fstab, modules.autoload, etc. 
reverted to some default values making my system unbootable and unusable.

how about never overwriting my /etc files in any circumstances ?

not the fault of etc-update

1) Replace original with update
2) Delete update, keeping original as is
3) Interactively merge original with update
4) Show differences again

don't just update every file blind !!!!
