How is that different from x11-themes/gentoo-artwork and x11-themes/gentoo-artwork-livecd ?

It's not provide any wallpapers, it's provide grub and fbsplash theme.

FBsplash theme has backgrounds for resolutions from 640x480 to 1600x1200.

pic=/etc/splash/natural-gentoo/images/verbose-1280x1024.jpg

does not seem to work. In verbose mode I see only text. I can't see the small text and logo on the bottom on the screen.

The file exists, so it should work. Try to re-generate the initrd image.

Maybe the problem is I don't use an initrd image? I compile my own kernel. Currently I'm using gentoo-sources-2.6.33

I'm using vanilla-sources-2.6.33.1 patched with the fbcondecor-0.9.6-2.6.33-rc7.patch and it works well for me. I'm using the resolution 1024x768 within the initrd image.
