This looks like an Emacs 21 startup sequence to me. What is the output of "eselect emacs list"? $ eselect emacs list Available GNU Emacs symlink targets: [1] emacs-21 * [2] emacs-22 $ ;-) OK, this fixed that for me:
eselect emacs set 2
Don't know whether the handling of multiple emacs version could be improved. I have installed:
app-editors/emacs
selected: 21.4-r15 22.2-r1

Well... Our decision was to keep the selected version and _not_ automatically update it to the newest one installed. Otherwise I'm sure users would complain about things like ~/.emacs files being incompatible between Emacs 21 and 22. It's difficult to make everybody happy.
Closing as invalid.
