Upgrade to this version cased the following message in Messages buffer.
If I ignor ethis and edit some of my files I cannot save them. Luckily, at least the temp file with filename starting with # exists. I have even done 'rm -rf ~/.emacs'!

This looks like an Emacs 21 startup sequence to me.
What is the output of "eselect emacs list"?
Comment 2 Martin Mokrejš 2008-05-11 10:25:44 UTC
$ eselect emacs list
Available GNU Emacs symlink targets:
  [1]   emacs-21 *
  [2]   emacs-22
$

;-)
Comment 3 Martin Mokrejš 2008-05-11 11:55:14 UTC
OK, this fixed that for me:

eselect emacs set 2

Don't know whether the handling of multiple emacs version could be improved. I have installed:

 app-editors/emacs
    selected: 21.4-r15 22.2-r1

Well... Our decision was to keep the selected version and _not_ automatically update it to the newest one installed. Otherwise I'm sure users would complain about things like ~/.emacs files being incompatible between Emacs 21 and 22. It's difficult to make everybody happy.

Closing as invalid.
